I took this and the other 360-degree photos (below) of the GenOn power plant in Avon Lake, Ohio on March 28, 2022 – five days before ownership of the facility was transferred to Charah Solutions Inc.

Charah Solutions has a subsidiary, Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group (ALERG), that will tear down the coal-fired, electricity-generating station. They will oversee the redevelopment of the 40 lakefront acres and work with the city “to expand economic activity to benefit the surrounding communities through job creation and enable this site to provide the best potential use for the community and City of Avon Lake moving forward,” as noted in a press release.

See and hear memories, photographs, and videos of the power plant on Avon Lake Community TV's special web page commemorating it's 91 year history here. There are many amazing exterior shots taken in every season – both day and night. There's also some fascinating interior shots dating back to the opening of the plant.

  1. I worked at the Avon Lake Plant for over 10 years.
Don’t see any pictures of the boilers?
See only pictures of the turbines and control rooms where everything was extremely clean!
I was an instrument tech and spent more time on the boilers than in the clean environment of the turbines.

  2. Hi Ron,

Thank you for your comment! I wasn’t given access to the boiler area so I was thrilled to get the photos I was allowed to take.

Are you retired now? If you are, what are you doing to stay active?

  3. Pretty awesome pictures of the lobby and the turbine room! I worked in a power plant in southeastern Ohio for 13 1/2 years. It was originally the Ohio Edison R.E. Burger plant in Shadyside Ohio which eventually became First Energy. Our turbine room was very wide with 5 turbines but definitely not as long as this one. Thank you for sharing the photos!

  4. Thank you for sharing your experience at another power plant, Ed. I’m glad you enjoyed my photos as well.
